The Persuasions lead singer Jerry Lawson is my favorite vocalist of all time and
an ongoing inspiration to me. Trading lead vocals with him on the Carmen
Sandiego album version of My Home is one of my proudest professional
accomplishments. I consider Jerry one of my musical mentors, and I've heard
him refer to me as like a son, which makes be blush with pride. I first saw the
Persuasions perform in 1981 while I was in the High Jinks. Early Rockapella
pilfered many Persuasions arrangements including, Man Oh Man, Chain
Gang, Return To Sender, Mint Julep, Moonlight & Music and Sixty-Minute
Man. We've since shared many bills with the Persuasions, the first being the
PBS special, Spike & Co: Do it A Cappella. I fondly recall an impromptu
7
a.m. coffee-cart jam -- just Rockapella and Lawson, after which he ribbed his
bandmates, Hell, I don't need you guys -- I've got Rockapella! We also
collaborated with the Persuasions on the concert, film and live album of Zappa's
Universe. This picture was taken at Tramps, NYC, in 1997.
