Sean and his band -- L-R: Matt, Sean, Bryant,
Tony My first post-Rockapella band has been launched! At this, our first full-band gig, my fitful-but-improving guitar work was supported by Matt Detro on guitar, Tony James on percussion and Bryant McNeil on bass. The stalwart Fred Schuchman worked his wizardry on the sound board.
Sean with David Yazbek As I expected it would be, this gig was loose but exciting and -- all told -- an auspicious beginning to my career as a late-blooming rock icon. The evening saw the song debuts of "Are You a Man," "Hazel Eyes," "Daisy Simone" and "Polly Gets"; guitar debuts included "Follow Me to Heaven," "Pretty Baby" and and an acid-jazz-tinged "The Pink Pig." My high school/college pal and Carmen Sandiego collaborator, David Yazbek, joined me for three songs. We sang a duet on the Beatles' "Two of Us," he added both guitar and vocals on his peppy "Seems to Me," and he played the melodica with the band on "My Home," the classic tune we co-wrote.
Sean accompanies himself on acoustic guitar The room was full but small enough to be intimate, which allowed me to interact closely with the audience and impregnate the women in the first three rows. When Yazbek broke a string on my acoustic guitar, I trotted out my acclaimed $100 '60s Silvertone electric and discussed the science of adjusting the length of the shoulder-strap in order to show off the guitar's subliminal phallic likeness to best effect. Sean belts out a song I gifted one lucky woman with a do-your-own-'do magnetic-pen "Hairdo Harriet" ensemble, after serenading her with "Hazel Eyes." To ingratiate myself further with the audience, I treated everyone to individually wrapped chocolates, the digestion of which, scientists claim, approximates the "love sensation." I spied a few lusty grins, but no one stripped. Next gig, I'll leave nothing to chance: raw oysters for all.
There were no casualties and surprisingly few cases of incontinence. I hope to do better next time.
